Most of you know that my son Ben had a longboarding accident recently and suffered a traumatic brain injury. I’m sitting in the hospital as I write this.
Earlier this morning, Ben’s speech therapist talked to my wife and I about dealing with “mental exhaustion.” She pointed out that Ben will tire easily after doing homework, watching television, or otherwise performing complex activities. Things that were easy for him to do two months ago may be impossible—or very difficult.
When he is exhausting himself, his face will go slack, showing little emotion, and he will literally lose the ability to focus. So he will need to take “mental breaks” frequently, perhaps every fifteen minutes or so at first. Right now, Ben can’t watch an entire movie, for example. So going out to the movies is something that we shouldn’t try for awhile.
