BOOK RECOMMENDATION: Jodi Taylor's Just One Damned Thing after Another, Part Two

In case my previous post didn't incite you to check out this book, here are some tempting quotations from that wonderful start to the series (that I've Americanized from her British English spellings), just to show you this author's wit and talent:
[This] day I got away from that invention of the devil—family.
[A] woman in a smartly tailored suit. She looked elegant, dignified, and judgmental.
Thinking carefully is something that happens to other people.
She was unpopular, self-important, and lacking the sense of humor gene.
I hadn’t realized how closely together we would live and work. … Now we moved into the physical part of our training. Apparently, up until now, we’d had it easy. … I suspect there are married couples who have less intimate physical contact than we did.
I started to make plans. Not to cheat exactly, because that would be wrong, wouldn’t it? More like dealing with the situation on my own terms.
How did you find the East Gate?
I was looking for the South Gate.
I can’t seem to find your name on the transport list.
Bloody hellfire, sir. Does that mean I didn’t have to do this?

“Miss Black, there are two Ps in oppressed and only one N in minority. You are neither. Delete [that]."
I saved Sussman’s life when he told Kal her bum looked big in a bustle.
He looked tired. I looked at the clock. It was so late it was early.
The reason I can’t deal with sympathy is because I never bloody get any.
You’re more generous than I think I would be.
Yes, well, he’s dead, and I’m not. If it was the other way around, I’d probably be a bit miffed.
Half of me looked forward to seeing what she had done, half of me didn’t want to go out and mix with people just yet, and half of me (presumably the half that can’t add up) didn’t want to see her because I knew she would blame me for Sussman.
Dieter and Markham … squared up to each other. Given their respective sizes, it was rather like a chipmunk hurling itself at Mount Everest.
My fist, traveling at the combined speeds of rage and retribution, impacted hard on her nose.
Directly or indirectly, I was responsible for everyone currently in sick bay. That had to be some sort of record.
"You’ve seen this unit go through historians like laxatives through a short grandmother."
Others came to help. I’ve never been undressed by so many people.
He was calm and soothing and had a reasonable explanation for everything. No woman should have to put up with that.
The building … was just like us—noisy and gloriously tasteless.
We had them on speed-dial. They had us on their blacklist.
In the distance, I could hear shouting. And screaming. Familiar sounds. St. Mary’s [staff] thundered past on their way to make a crisis considerably worse. It was nice to be home.
See what you're missing?

What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales in comparison to what lies inside of you. Ralph Waldo Emerson
When you give someone a book, you don’t give him just paper, ink, and glue.  You give him the possibility of a whole new life. Christopher Morley

One-Liners (Sometimes More)

I take it by your not-amused, dangerous, middle-of-the-road hailing to stop me that I have somehow irritated you. Again. [Holt speaking to Neva, p. 47/141 single-spaced MSWord pages (or ~33%), Good Ole Boys.]

I love quotes. Even my own! What can I say? It is one of the finer addictions an author can share.

There’s more to life than increasing its speed and size. Timothy Ferriss

Always…unconditionally…follow your heart. Understand that persistence, hard work, and determination are the keys to success. Barbara Cage, poet

Authors' Anytime Tip

The answer to career and lifestyle quandaries is simple, really. We only need to know the WHAT that we want. The HOW and WHY aren't necessary--in fact, they can be obstacles to action.

Mike McManus, Founder of the Source Experience

While we are storytellers and may need to now the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How of our tales, the above quote reassures us that we DO NOT need all that info to pursue our careers.

So no matter whether you will only go the traditionally published route, or you are all-Indie (like me), or you are going Indie while you await that traditional contract, remember the brass ring we all seek:

  • To type up the creations that live in our minds.
  • To enjoy the process.
  • To celebrate each The End.
  • To memorialize each In The Beginning.

Best wishes, all!

A New Favorite Career Quote

If you are reading this particular blog post on the same day it was created, you will also see this marvelous quote under my blog banner.  But for those who find this tomorrow or later, and for me, this entry will allow us all to review it again.  And again.

Courtesy of Quote of the Day:

"Find a job you like and you add five days to every week."  H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

That is so true.  In this, my second career, I feel like I'm on vacation every day.  In fact, it is hard to tell my Mondays from my Saturdays.  I work pretty much every day.  It's so much fun, why would I not?

A Beautiful Author-Related Quote to Share, from Jane Austen to You

Quotes are my friends, my collaborators, my teachers, representing snippets of life in usually fifty words or less.  Be they funny outlooks or sage advice or relationship insight, they exist for all of us.

Here's one for us authors:
It is only a novel... or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language.
Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey

I admire Jane Austen so much.  She and Nora Roberts are my mentors, having such a wonderful understanding of human interactions.

I aspire to be like them one day.

For now, I continue to create and hone my craft.  One day at a time.

My Blog's First Anniversary Coming Up!

On May 3, 2011, I started this blog.  I posted eighty-four times in 2011.  Counting this entry, ninety articles make up my 2012 creations herein--already exceeding last year's total.

I had no idea how fulfilling blogging would be to me, or I would have begun much sooner.  I love sharing the wonderful books I've read, writing tips, quotations and other inspirations such as the stats from fellow authors.  It is all good.  Represents what I seek from others.

And proves what is said about you learn as you teach others.
